It’s important to work out how much paint you will need so that you don’t waste any or end up running out before you have finished! You can find out how much you will need by working out the surface area for the room you are painting and then multiplying this by the number of coats you will need and allowing for a little extra to make sure you don’t run out. You are likely to use more paint if you are using a roller than if you are using a brush, so it is worth calculating extra paint usage if you prefer the coverage you get with a roller.
You’ll need to decide what type of paint you want based on the results you desire and the finish you find suits your home best. For instance, if you have very small children and often have to wipe your walls, a satin finish will be much easier to keep clean. Take the time to prepare once you have chosen your paint, clearing anything non-essential out of the room you are painting and covering all remaining furniture and carpets with plastic sheets or protective covers.
You should clean your walls before you begin painting to remove any dirt or grease and let them dry completely. If you need to repair the walls you will be painting you should do this with Polyfilla or plaster as required and then sand the repaired areas when they are dry to ensure you have a smooth surface to paint on. After this, you can use masking tape to cover light switches and the edges of windows and doors so that they will not be covered in paint.
You should stir your paint thoroughly before you begin and then start by painting the edges of the room with a brush. Once you have done the edges, you can fill in the walls with a roller, using it both diagonally and vertically to ensure even coverage. You should check how long it will take for the paint you are using to dry, usually around 2-4 hours, and then apply a second coat to achieve the colour finish you want. When you have finished, carefully remove the tape and clean your brushes properly so that they can be used again.
