Making your own compost is a great way to recycle organic waste from your kitchen and your garden and make use of this to feed your plants. It’s easy to get started and our 220L compost bin is a good option to keep the process simple. You’ll need a compost bin in your kitchen so that you can pop all your raw kitchen scraps into it before transferring them to your compost bin or pile outside. When installing your outdoor compost bin, choose your location carefully, ensuring that it has good drainage and airflow.

You can compost uncooked food, grass clippings and garden waste and you should ensure that you have a good balance of ‘green’ and ‘brown’ materials in your compost bin. Green materials such as vegetable peelings and grass should be combined with brown materials like dry leaves, cardboard and twigs to ensure a mixture of carbon-rich and nitrogen-rich materials. It can help to add a small amount of garden soil or compost to introduce the micro-organisms that will help break down your compost.

It’s important to keep your compost pile moist to encourage your raw materials to decompose, so you may need to water it lightly in very dry weather. It is also a good idea to turn it regularly to encourage decomposition and prevent bad smells. Apart from an occasional turn and water, your compost pile is best left alone. It can take several months or even a year for materials to break down, depending on the size and contents of your compost bin and the environmental conditions, so you’ll need to be patient to enjoy the results of your labours. Eventually, you’ll have a finished compost that is dark, crumbly and ready to use in your garden.
