Studies show that you will actually use more water when hand washing dishes and this means that when you use your dishwasher, you can save yourself a great deal of time and relax in the knowledge that this is the better option for the environment.

Looking after your dishwasher will extend its life and ensure that your dishes come out squeaky clean, every time. You should scrape all excess food off dishes before putting them in the dishwasher to prevent blockages, but you don’t need to rinse plates as this will waste water. You shouldn’t overload your dishwasher as this will prevent effective cleaning, and you should stack carefully to protect your dishes. For instance, plastic items, glasses and mugs should be loaded on the top rack, which is designed to clean these effectively, and your cutlery should be put into the cutlery rack with the handles downwards, for the most effective cleaning. Put knives in with the blade down, however, to avoid cutting yourself when you unload your dishwasher!
